Jackson National's John Brown Named COFIR Chairman

(Washington D.C.)—The Coalition Opposed to a Federal Insurance Regulator (COFIR) today announced its new Chairman, John Brown. Brown currently serves as Vice President Government Relations for Jackson National® Life Insurance Company, where he oversees Jackson National's government relations efforts at the local, state and federal levels.  Brown consistently represents Jackson National by advocating its interests with industry trade groups and their representatives.

“As the new Chairman of COFIR, John brings a dynamic perspective to the OFC debate, chiefly Jackson National’s ability to thrive in the current state-based system through a standard of excellence through its product innovation, corporate execution and industry competition.  Additionally, from his work internationally, he understands how a single-regulator system can lead to an oligopoly within the insurance industry, leaving consumers with few choices to meet their insurance needs,” stated Greg Wren, Executive Director of COFIR.

John Brown will replace Charles Symington, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs-Independent Agents and Brokers of America, Inc., as the coalition’s chairman for 2008-2009.

“Charles has been an enormous asset as COFIR Chairman. We are grateful for his leadership and support,” stated Greg Wren, Executive Director of COFIR. “We are looking forward continuing our strong relationship with the BIG I” as we welcome John as our new Chairman,” added Wren.

“Since Jackson National utilizes independent agents to distribute and market its products, John not only understands how OFC legislation could adversely affect a large national company, but he understands how it will affect thousands of independent agents nationwide,” said Charles Symington, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs-Independent Agents and Brokers of America, Inc.

Jackson National Life Insurance Company is the 17th largest life insurance company in the United States.  Its parent company, is Prudential plc, United Kingdom.

The Coalition Opposed to a Federal Insurance Regulator is a fast-growing coalition of insurance companies and trade associations which oppose federal efforts to create a dual, bifurcated system of state and federal insurance laws and regulations. COFIR opposes Congressional legislation to create a federal insurance regulator which would require a massive new fedetal bureaucracy for removed from the consumers in each state .

COFIR continues to stand in fierce opposition to the creation of a massive new federal bureaucracy far removed from the states, which would threaten consumer protections while building an unnecessary and confusing dual system of insurance laws and regulations.
