COFIR Statement on McCarran-Ferguson Anti-Trust Exemption
COFIR aligns itself with companies, agents, and organizations who oppose current legislation to repeal the limited McCarran-Ferguson antitrust exemption for the business of insurance. State regulation of insurance, in conjunction with the qualified application of federal antitrust law, serves consumers and the industry well. This proposed repeal of the McCarran-Ferguson antitrust exemption would establish unnecessary dual federal and state regulation by granting the Federal Trade Commission additional oversight and power to investigate the insurance market. Subjecting the insurance market to such additional oversight from the federal government would create more problems than it solves.
