Attorneys General and Governors Oppose Optional Federal Charter

On February 20, 2009, the National Association of Governors joined the National Association of Attorneys General in opposing the creation of an optional federal charter for insurance.

In a letter to Senators Christopher Dodd and Richard Shelby and Representatives Barney Frank and Spencer Bachus, Governors Ed Rendell and James Douglas said, “States often lead the way with regard to reform and innovation and this is true of insurance regulation. Unlike banking and securities, insurance is a fundamentally different financial product because it involves unique consumer protection issues linked to local conditions."
